MYTHS & TIPS ON DEALING WITH OILY, ACNE-PRONE SKIN

Dealing with acne is no easy feat, and it can be even more challenging as there are so many myths surrounding the topic. In order to make it a bit easier, we’ve debunked some of the most common myths and compiled a few tips that can be really helpful when dealing with oily, acne-prone skin. Let’s dive in!

MYTH #1: OILY SKIN DOESN’T NEED MOISTURISER

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: oily, acne-prone skin should not skip this crucial skincare step! Skin dryness is one of the main causes of acne breakouts, so keeping skin moisture levels balanced is key.

Choose a moisturiser specifically formulated to help regulate sebum production that is non-comedogenic.

MYTH#2: OVER EXFOLIATING HELPS CLEAR ACNE MORE QUICKLY

While it’s true that exfoliation is an extremely powerful ally in combating acne, breakouts can by no means be simply scrubbed away. In fact, over exfoliation can have the complete opposite effect as it can severely dry out skin and lead to further breakouts.

Over washing and over exfoliating leads to excessive dryness causing your oil producing glands to secrete more oil but also clog up pores with dead skin cells that are lost through the process.

MYTH#3: IF THERE ARE NO SKIN BUMPS, THERE’S NO NEED TO WORRY

Oily skin by definition produces a high amount of sebum, making it more likely for pores to become blocked and acne to appear. For every visible skin bump, there are many other invisibles ones underneath the skin surface.

People with oily, acne-prone skin with no active breakouts should also stick to products that help prevent the reoccurrence of acne and blemishes. Consistency is key.

MYTH#4: WEARING MAKEUP WILL MAKE BREAKOUTS WORSE

When dealing with active breakouts, makeup can really help improve confidence levels, but some commonly found ingredients can certainly make your breakouts worse. Certain makeup routines, particularly those that are high in coverage, can contribute to breakouts due to blocked pores.

But don’t toss your makeup away just yet – there are many products out there that are more suitable to use on oily, acne-prone skin. Look for mineral-based makeup that is non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.

TIP#1: HAVE A (MINIMAL) ROUTINE – AND STICK TO IT!

Having an acne specific routine is the first step in fighting acne breakouts. Keeping your routine as simple as possible is the second step, as too many ingredients can further aggravate the severity of the breakouts.

Essential skincare steps include a gentle soap free cleanser, an acne specific moisturiser and a non-comedogenic sunscreen.

TIP#2: DON’T SQUEEZE YOUR PIMPLES

Under no circumstance should you pick at your active breakouts, as this will only cause more inflammation. Our fingernails carry bacteria underneath that can potentially infiltrate the already inflamed pores – a recipe for disaster. If that wasn’t enough, squeezing your pimples is a one-way ticket to acne scarring which will stay long after your breakouts are gone.

The trauma from squeezing your pimples can affect the skins own reparative changes and can lead to dark marks (also known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and can exacerbate acne scarring. Big no-no!

TIP#3: REGULARLY CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT TOUCHES YOUR FACE OFTEN

Think pillowcases, makeup brushes… Anything your face constantly comes in contact with! You should be changing your bedding at least once a week and the same goes for how often you should clean your makeup brushes.

TIP#4: BE PATIENT

This may just be the most important tip of all – be patient! Acne breakouts don’t form overnight, so they won’t be going anywhere that quickly either.

Give your routine some time to work, be consistent and above all, don’t give up.
