Eczema
in detail

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, inherited skin condition involving inflammation.

L'atopie en détails
  • WHAT IS IT?

Atopic dermatitis is mainly characterised by dry, red and inflamed skin that is intensely itchy. It is an ongoing continuum involving flare-ups and periods of remission

  • WHERE?

Depending on age, dry, thickened and scaly red skin can form on localised areas.
In newborns, it is first found on the cheeks, forehead, arms and legs, but within a year it may appear in skin folds such as the neck, elbows and knees.

  • WHY?

Eczema is a complex disease associated with:

Skin with a damaged barrier that cannot completely repair itself, allowing microorganisms, allergens and irritants to penetrate, whilst losing moisture excessively.

A heightened immune system with increased sensitivity to triggers, causing the skin to be more reactive.

  • WHO IS AFFECTED?

Eczema is an extremely common disease, with 1 in 5 New Zealand children under the age of 5 affected.*

Causes of eczema

Eczema is a complex disease associated with: Skin with a damaged barrier that cannot completely repair itself, allowing microorganisms, allergens and irritants to penetrate, whilst losing moisture excessively.
A heightened immune system with increased sensitivity to triggers, causing the skin to be more reactive.

NORMAL SKIN
THE SKIN ACTS AS A PROTECTIVE BARRIER:

  • Skin cells, and the 'cement' that binds them together, are normal in composition and levels.
  • Water evaporates at ordinary levels.
  • Thus, allergens are unable to penetrate through the skin.

ECZEMA-PRONE SKIN
The skin cannot fulfill its function as a protective barrier:

  • Skin cells, and the 'cement' that binds them together, are impaired.
  • Too much water evaporates.
  • Skin is dehydrated and dry.
  • Allergens can penetrate the skin and cause inflammation.

Managing
your eczema

For flare-ups, whereby the skin is red and inflamed, please see your doctor.

Use a suitable moisturiser twice a day, everyday, even when you're not having a flare-up.

This will help hydrate your skin and soothe itching sensations.

There are many tips to help stop you scratching, which can cause further problems for your skin.
