In the shower

  • Use an ultra-rich cleansing oil that's soap and fragrance free.
  • Never use soap, fragranced products or products containing alcohol.
  • Don't rub your skin too hard with a towel.
  • Wash gently with your hands: softer and cleaner than a glove.

On my skin

  • Apply prescription creams to inflamed areas as directed by your doctor
  • Apply moisturising cream at least twice daily to hydrate your skin.
  • Soothe itching sensations* by repeatedly applying a steady spray of Avène Thermal Spring Water.
  • Use dermo-cosmetic makeup.

Daily

  • Choose clothes made of soft materials like cotton.
  • Use hypoallergenic detergents.
  • Don't use harsh chemical cleaning products.

Sometimes people ask me if 'm sunburned. Flare-ups can be challenging mentally as well as physically. XeraCalm doesn't cure my eczema, because nothing can yet, but not wanting to scratch all the time is a huge win.

How my skin works

Eczema is a complex disease associated with: Skin with a damaged barrier that cannot completely repair itself, allowing microorganisms, allergens and irritants to penetrate, whilst losing moisture excessively. A heightened immune system with increased sensitivity, causing the skin to be more reactive.

NORMAL SKIN
The skin acts as a protective barrier:

  • Skin cells, and the 'cement' that binds them together, are normal in composition and levels.
  • Water evaporates at ordinary levels.
  • Thus, allergens are unable to penetrate through the skin.

ECZEMA-PRONE SKIN
The skin cannot fulfill its function
as a protective barrier:

  • Skin cells, and the 'cement' that binds them together, are impaired.
  • Too much water evaporates.
  • Skin is dehydrated and dry.
  • Allergens can penetrate the skin and cause inflammation.
